How’s the Electric Pony going?

October 22, 2011 in apricot centre, Food, local economy, Marina, markets, organic, organic orchard, peak oil, reskilling, reskilling project, sustainability, The Great Reskilling, transition town initiative, transition valley, Uncategorized

Hello, I thought I’d let you know how the ‘electric pony’ aka Wallace and Edward 3-wheeler milk float renovation project is going. As you may remember the Electric Pony was conceived during a ‘Ways and Means’ walk through the Dedham Vale as part of the Reskilling Project in March 2010. I was inspired by Val Belsay’s (Green Lanes) description of how produce and resources were moved through the valley and marketed in years gone by, using; green lanes, packhorse and ponies for transporting fruit and vegetables as well as other important resources. They seemed also to have the networking role of sharing news across the valley also.

This led to the idea for an ‘electric pony’, a retro-modern vehicle, to move and market local seasonal foodstuffs through Dedham Vale and the surrounding area. Later that year we found a 1946 Wallace & Edwards 3-Wheel Electric Milk Float. The float was purchased from a farm just off the M25/A12 when it was found on Ebay.

The vehicle is looking much the same, however we have done alot of work stripping down the components and having them tested. The good news is that it is mechanically sound, and even the electric motor is working! The downside, which was expected is that the lead batteries are no longer working, and this will be the most expensive thing to replace.

This year (2011/12) the Apricot Centre has collaborated with other organic producers and sellers in and around the Dedham Vale and is working on the Dedham Vale Food Hub researching the possibility of providing a wide range of organic foodstuffs (the whole basket), educational visits, seasonal celebrations etc.. And the Electric Pony is planned to play a role in delivering to local venues, schools etc.. reaching out to local communities from the hub.

We hope to gain some further funding in January 2012 towards completing this project and bringing this delightful vehicle to fulfill the dream of linking up local communities with local organic food, and local news.

The Transition Movement comes to the Stour Valley!

April 23, 2009 in transition town initiative, transition valley

Many people are concerned about ‘Climate Change’ and ‘Peak Oil’ (the end of cheap and plentiful oil on which our economies are based). We may feel frustrated or alarmed about the way the world is changing. We may not be able to continue to live in a way that depends so much on fossil fuels. What can we do that both motivates and enables people to adapt and develop local ‘resilience’? This is a term coined by The Transition Town Movement that has been inspired by some pioneering communities in the UK, Ireland and beyond. These communities are taking an integrated and inclusive approach to reduce their carbon footprint and increase their ability to withstand the fundamental shift that will accompany the increasing scarcity of fossil fuels.

In the Stour Valley, a group has started by having meetings and is setting up a core group to take forward the initiative and to adopt the Transition Model. At the first meeting we had two people from the Ipswich group who explained the process and we saw videos of some other groups around the country. At a recent meeting we identified the skills of those within the group and found we had a wide range of really very useful people! Everyone has something to offer in this process and it is all about recognising each other’s abilities and developing and sharing skills. It is also about having fun, meeting people and developing a ‘resilient’ community.

The next stage is to raise awareness and to engage a significant proportion of people in the Stour Valley community to kick off a Transition Initiative. Meetings have been held at Lawford and East Bergholt and future meetings will be held in other villages around the Stour Valley

If you are interested in getting involved-our events and meetings are on the events page and more information is on the movement can be found on www.transitiontowns.org.uk

Transition Stour Valley

February 2, 2009 in transition town initiative, transition valley

Over 30 people were set to come to the first meeting of Transition Stour Valley at the Apricot Centre, on Monday 2nd of February, which turned out to be a day of snow and cancelled everythings.

Many rang unable to make it and we rang others to let them know it was cancelled, and then a hardcore of 9 people turned up and so we had a meeting anyway. Thankyou Alan and Dan for a great introduction.

The Transition Stour Valley Meeting has now been rescheduled to Monday 23rd of February from 7.30pm – 9-30pm.

Transition Town Initiatives -

December 25, 2008 in climate change, peak oil, transition town initiative, transition valley

Transition Town initiatives are springing up throught the UK (and world) in a positive and pro-active response to Peak Oil and Climate Change.

Transition addresses these global issues at a local level by working towards resilient communities which are able to function through times of great turbulence and change.

“The Transition Movement is an attempt to design abundant pathways down from the oil peak, to generate new stories about what might be waiting for us at the end of our descent, and to put resilience-building back at the heart of anyplans we make for the future.”
(Rob Hopkins, Founder of the Transition Movement)
