Alex King
I work as an integrative therapist with a core foundational training in person-centred therapy and meditation. As well as my predominately person-centred approach I am very influenced by eastern traditions of philosophy and thought. Through over 20 years practice in insight meditation and as a trained meditation teacher through the Oxford Mindfulness Foundation, I can offer a mindful connection with a style of listening borne from an inner stillness and authentic curiosity about others, tuning carefully into what is said and what is not said. By working in this way new opportunities can spontaneously emerge and firmly held beliefs may be seen in a new light.
I have received training in ecotherapy or what is more commonly known as ‘walk and talk therapy’. For this we are able to either utilise the space at the Apricot Centre or the grounds of Dartington Hall. I believe that any healing is closely connected to nature and that being outdoors can help to feel less confined and more free to explore thoughts and process emotions.
Before I moved back to Devon in 2021 I lived in London for 15 years working in the charity sector for mental health and rough sleeping organisations in both front line and managerial roles. As well as counselling I have worked with Exeter University since 2021 supporting students in a welfare capacity while my spare time is mostly spent either with family and friends, working on my allotment or trying to be creative. As a Film Studies graduate and writer of plays and short stories I have a keen interest in creativity and the arts. This inevitably plays a role in my therapy through the use of metaphor, imagery, sandtray and art based methods such as drawing, painting or collage to express feelings.
